The first known reference to the Surfbird appears in a journal of Prince William written in 1778 on a voyage to Alaska. Surfbirds are migratory winter shorebirds found on the Pacific Coast of North America. During the breeding season, they are mostly found in the mountain ranges of Alaska and the Yukon Territory. Surfbirds meals consist primarily of insects, mussels, snails, spiders, flies, beetles, and other small invertebrates. They are especially adept at using their bills to chisel mollusks from between rocks. They also use their bills to flip over pebbles in their constant search for food. Surfbirds are not solitary creatures. When you see them at all, you will see them in flocks, although the flocks will be small ones of around around twenty birds or so.
