Squirrel Proofing Your Bird House

If you love birds and would like to attract them to visit and maybe set up permanent residence in your back yard, one of the best ways of doing this is to provide them with shelter in the form of a bird house. Unfortunately, squirrels are attracted to the same type of environment as birds so you will soon find yourself trying to think of ways of squirrel proofing your bird house.

If you do research on squirrel proofing your bird house in a humane way you will find there are three basic ways of going about it.

Unique ways of squirrel proofing your bird house

Squirrels are very athletic. They can leap anywhere from three to four feet and a horizontal leap anywhere from six to ten feet. So the first way of squirrel proofing your bird house is to place it at least six feet off of the ground and at least ten feet away from a convenient surface that they can use as a launching pad. This step alone will probably resolve the bulk of your squirrel problems.

A second way of squirrel proofing your bird house is to take advantage of the fact that they can taste things that birds can't.  For instance, squirrels can taste the spice in chili peppers but birds cannot.  So one way for squirrel proofing your bird house is to throw some chili peppers in your feeder and the squirrels will get the message.  It is actually the capsaicin in the chili peppers that does it and there are some capsaicin based mixtures you can get especially for bird feeder that will help in squirrel proofing your bird house.

And lastly, the third way of bird proofing your bird house is to take advantage of technology. You can find bird houses that have all of their perches on sensors that are activated by the weight of a squirrel.  Once they are activated they give the little feller the ride of his life by spinning and bouncing up and down in a motion that eventually convinces him to leave and possibly never come back.

Armed with the above information you should be able to squirrel proof your bird houses and make a nice and inviting home for the birds that you love.
