If you love birds, a solar bird bath makes a nice addition to any garden. Especially for those wishing to contribute to the saving of the environment, a solar bird bath is a bit more environmentally friendly than they traditional electrical powered one. In addition to garden bird feeders, birds are also naturally attracted to water. A water splash will attract the attention of many bird species. A bird bath with constant water flow is very effective in attracting birds while simultaneously making the are less attractive to mosquitoes who prefer still waters. How Solar Bird Baths Are DesignedThe typical solar power bird bath is designed with a running water feature such as fountainheads, water showers or cascades. Instead of electricity to control the running of the water, solar energy is employed. No electrical cables or pipes are needed. A small solar compartment is connected to the water source that supplies energy to the bird bath. The water continually circulates through the fountainheads or shower element and is recycled through a central reservoir.
There are several designs of solar bird baths. Solar bird bath is made up of different materials such as metals, ceramics, resins and plastics. A solar bath is available in both stand and ground while the stand solar bath such as fountain or a waterfall is more common since a slight elevation will help keep the solar bath free of ground debris that may obscure the solar cell.
Advantages of a Solar Bird BathInstalling a solar controlled fountain in the backyard has both advantages and disadvantages. Of course, the advantages of solar birth bath are twofold. One, they only need solar power to operate - so your electrical bill will probably go down. And, two, they do not need cables. This means that you have much more flexibility in where you can easily position the bird bath. Disadvantages of a Solar Bird BathThere are a few disadvantages of solar bird baths as well. One, they normally require complete solar power to function properly. Two, they need more water refilling due to higher evaporation (and they should not be allowed to run dry, less the pump be damaged). Three, with most designs there is difficulty in cleaning since the solar compartment is sensitive. Three, as a rule, solar bird baths are more fragile than electrical based ones and not built for harsh winters and constantly cool and chilling temperatures. Four, at the present time, solar bird baths are more expensive compared to the electrically powered and corded baths. Buying Your Solar Bird BathBefore buying, check the sunlight requirements for the unit you are considering. If your backyard or garden has insufficient sunlight, you will be disappointed with its performance. Since solar bird baths can be fragile, make sure that the return/replacement policies are acceptable to you. And, save the box that it is shipped in for a month or two, just in case. It is best to buy a solar bird bath when you will install it right away. That way you can be sure that all of its components are working properly. Check the power compartment to ensure that it functions properly with the solar energy and the flow of the running water.
