Platform Bird Feeder

If you want to attract the widest variety of birds possible, a platform bird feeder is the best type of feeder to have in your back yard.

Platform feeders are attractive to the birds for a number of reasons. For normally ground feeding birds, a platform bird feeder, because its a flat broad surface gives them a similar feeling to feeding on the ground. An added enticement to them, however, is that since it is above ground, it is a bit more out of reach of many of their predators. Thus they feel safer. This is especially true for the elevated platform feeders which can be placed high and out of reach of squirrels.

If your platform bird feeder has pest guards, it can then be placed at a lower height and, yet, still protect the birds from predators.

platform bird feederMany bird feeders have perches onto which birds can alight and feed. Some birds, however, do not like perches - or at least it is not their first choice. A platform bird feeder, unlike a window bird feeder, attracts lots of birds who like to feed while standing on a flat surface as opposed to a thin perch.

The advantage of a platform bird feeder to the bird loving homeowner is that, unlike some specialized bird feeders, you can put a variety of bird food (seeds, nuts, suet, meal worms, and more) on the platform and, therefore, attract a vast variety of bird species.

The best platform bird feeders will have drainage holes on the platform to allow easy drainage of the bird food and prevent it from becoming moldy. It will also have a bottom that can be removed easily for cleaning.

You don't have to worry about being bored with a limited number of style options for your feeder. You can find platform bird feeders in many different styles. This is good because you will find that some birds have a preference for certain styles and are more likely to be attracted to those.

A platform bird feeder is considered a "non exclusive" type of feeder in that doesn't exclude any birds. Large and small birds can congregate together as well as different species. However, if you do want to limit your feeder to just small birds, some platform feeders come with adjustable domes. With these you can adjust the opening to only allow birds smaller than a certain size to enter the feeding area.

If you don't want to buy a feeder and are moderately handy with tools, you can opt to build your own platform bird feeder. Most are of simple construction and not too hard to build over the course of a weekend.
