Endangered Birds

Endangered birds are those that are in danger of extinction. The danger may come from man or it may be natural causes. But, usually, endangered birds are endangered because of man destroying their native habitats.

Experts list lost of habitat as the number one cause of species extinction. But, another reason for a decline of a bird species is the overuse of pesticides. Pesticides have been shown to cause the thinning of the eggshells in the eggs that birds lay - leaving many of their young to die before birth.

Protecting Endangered Bird Species

The Endangered Species act of 1973 provides for the conservation of the ecosystems of any animals that have been determined to be in danger of becoming extinct. The act also prohibits the transport of endangered species except by authorized exceptions and it prohibits them from being sold.

endangered birdsViolation of any of the rules governing endangered birds and animals is cause for arrest and the application of civil and/or criminal penalties. And even though there have been quite a few changes to the act, most of the modifications made to the act since it was first enacted into law have been to strengthen it. The act is now considered to be one of the strongest and best safeguards we have for protecting the habitats of endangered birds and other animals.

The Endangered Species Act allows the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to make the determination as to whether a bird species should be put on the endangered list. Once endangered birds are put on the list, the Secretary of the Interior can designate certain habitats as critical to the survival of the species. These habitats then become protected.

The Endangered Birds of North America

There are currently around 400 or so endangered birds in the world. These include birds such as the Whooping Crane, the Ivory Billed Woodpecker, the Hawaiian Crow, the Puerto Rican Parrot, Coastal California Gnatcatcher, Mexican Spotted Owl, and others. Until recently, the American Bald Eagle was on the endangered list as well. However, due to tis amazing resurgence, it was removed from the list in 2007.

The Bald Eagle is still protected, however, by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act and the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act. You can find an up to date list of the endangered birds, as well as other endangered animals, on the Audubon Society website.

The most dangerous species to endangered birds is man. At this point, man has just about absolute control over the ecosystem of the planet. Unfortunately, this power is often used without too much fore thought of its consequences. And too often this power is used purely in the chasing of profits.

Experts estimate that one of every eight bird species in the U.S. is in danger of becoming extinct. Unless attitudes change soon, many of the birds we see today will be lost to the planet forever.
