Backyard Bird Feeding

If you want to attract birds to your garden, backyard bird feeding is one of the best ways to go about it.

Long before man, birds were totally self sufficient. They lived and died based on how well they were able to hunt for and forage for foods in the wild. Today, however, hundreds of bird species are at least partially dependent on the foods that they are able to get from bird feeders in gardens all across the country.

This is great news for the ardent bird lovers. If a bird species is native to their part of the country, it is relatively easy to attract them to your back yard by installing a garden feeder stocked with seeds, fruits, and so on that are a part of their natural diet. And it results in a win/win situation. You are able to watch and observe the birds that you love in a comfortable, relaxing environment without having to leave home. And, when food is scarce or hard to find, the birds are able to supplement their diets with the seeds, suet, and other foods from your feeder.

Keep Them Coming Back For More

When setting up your backyard bird feeding station, the food, of course, is important. But you also want to make the surrounding environment welcoming for the birds. Primarily this means locating the feeder in a place where the birds can easily spot it and that is safe from predators. It is also helpful to locate a bird bath or fountain nearby. To the birds, this literally makes your garden seem like a 4 star resort hotel. In one place, they will be able to bathe, drink water, and relax in the sun. Don't be surprised if you see the same bird families coming back month after month.

Also, its a good idea to rotate the food choices that you offer them. Although, not strictly necessary, this helps to keep food boredom from setting in as they begin to anticipate what might be new at the feeder.

A bird feeding station is most helpful to birds in cold winters where, many times, they are struggling to survive. In fact, many bird families would not survive without these feeders. But bird feeders also come in handy in the spring and summer months. Especially if you are in a part of the country where draughts are common and the natural food sources for birds are hard to find.

More Than One Type of Feeder

Different bird species are attracted to different types of feeders. And if you want to attract a variety of species to your yard, and your yard is big enough, there is nothing to prevent you from having multiple types of feeders at various feeding stations in your garden.

Ultimately, the feeder choices you make, will determine the makeup and character of your private aviary.

Platform Bird Feeder
If you want to attract the widest variety of birds possible, a platform bird feeder is the best type of feeder to have in your back yard.

Breeding Lovebirds
Breeding lovebirds can be an enjoyable and enlightening experience. But before you embark on your breeding adventure, be advised that it will take a lot of your time.
